Motivational interviewing is a person/client centered approach for enhancing intrinsic motivation. Through the use of talk therapy client’s self awareness is increased.  The focus is placed on the client and how they can bring about their desired change. Ann Valee will encourage change by helping clients explore and resolve any ambivalence holding them back from accomplishing their goals.

Relapse Prevention Therapy focuses on addiction recovery and how to prevent relapse.  Relapse prevention strategies are developed around coping skills training, cognitive therapy, and lifestyle changes. Ann Valee will work with clients to identify coping skills to use for clients to identify high-risk situations, cope with urges and cravings; stay engaged in treatment and learn how to create a more balanced lifestyle. Ann Valee uses cognitive therapy to teach client’s strategies to recognize erroneous thinking and justifications, challenge self-defeating thinking and re-frame negative thoughts into productive thoughts and positive behaviors to succeed in their recovery.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is the most widely researched and recognized evidence-based therapy.  CBT is used for it's effectiveness with a broad base of clients from children to adults. The basis of cognitive therapy is that thoughts can influence feelings, beliefs and behaviors. CBT emphasizes the connection between thoughts and actions and how they are connected to life problems.  One's emotional response to a situation comes from one's interpretation of that situation and how they feel. Cognitive therapy suggests that many of our emotions are due to our thinking and how we process information. At times the way information is processed and interpreted is misguided.  In cognitive therapy unhealthy and distorted thinking is examined to understand its connection with ineffective ways of behaving.
By using cognitive therapy, Ann Valee will assist her clients to become aware of thoughts that can negatively influence their feelings resulting in undesirable reactions. Often one’s thoughts occur automatically, without the awareness of how they may affect emotions. Ann Valee will work with her clients to help them learn how to recognize these negative and often automatic thoughts and reframe them into positive thoughts influencing productive behaviors. Through the use of CBT, one will develop the skills to notice, interrupt, and correct these non-productive thoughts. New ways of viewing events, learning how to cope better, making behavioral changes will lead to an improved life.
